Made in Tuscany: the stages of making a WENLIH bag

Every WENLIH bag is designed in Paris and made in Tuscany. Between the drawing and the finished bag, there is a workshop, expert hands and a series of steps we want to show you. Here is how a Datura or a Vrille is born.

Scandicci, near Florence

Our partner workshop is located in Scandicci, a small town on the outskirts of Florence. This area is recognised as one of the great cradles of luxury leather goods: many international houses have their pieces made there, and the know-how is passed down from generation to generation.

The workshop we work with continues this tradition. It has long experience collaborating with leading brands, and it is this level of demand that we were looking for: a place where the gesture matters as much as the result.

Materials before gestures

A bag begins with its leathers. The exterior of WENLIH bags is natural-grain goat leather, from a historic tannery in Chabris, France, specialised in goat for over a century. The lining is lambskin, tanned in an Italian workshop. We detail this choice in our article on goat leather.

The stages of making

A WENLIH bag goes through several successive manual operations:

  1. Cutting. The hides are inspected then cut piece by piece, taking into account the direction of the grain and the most regular areas.
  2. Splitting. Each piece is brought to the desired thickness. A light bag and a clean fold depend on this step.
  3. Skiving and finishing the pieces. The edges are thinned and prepared so that the assemblies remain fine and regular.
  4. Assembly. The pieces are shaped and joined: bag body, flap, handle or shoulder strap, lining.
  5. Stitching. The elements are sewn, then inspected.
  6. Edge dyeing. The edges of the leather are dyed and smoothed, in several passes. On Vrille bags, the edges are hand-painted: they support the structure while preserving the natural suppleness of the leather.

Each of these steps is revisited, checked and refined. It is this repeated work that gives the bag its structure.

Why it matters

We are not trying to produce quickly. A bag made this way lasts through the seasons and trends; time leaves its marks, and that is precisely what we want: an object made to last and to accompany the woman who carries it.
